Abstract

Trauma, defined as bodily injury resulting from exposure to forces surpassing the body's natural resilience, holds a deep historical connection with human existence. The impact, mechanisms, and outcomes of trauma exhibit significant variations across age groups. This chapter reveals the critical role trauma plays in global mortality and focuses on pediatric trauma, emphasizing its distinct nature. A three-phase mortality pattern is delineated, highlighting the urgency of preventive efforts. Trauma is classified into three categories - blunt, penetrating, and deceleration - with pediatric-specific considerations. Intriguingly, the unique attributes of childhood, including body habitus and organ vulnerability, contribute to a greater risk of intra-abdominal injuries. Pediatric trauma, characterized by unique physiological responses and challenges in communication, demands specialized care. This comprehensive exploration underscores the importance of tailored approaches to pediatric trauma care and the continued quest for improved prevention and management strategies.
